New research reveals that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such treatments should be aware of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Use
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
